On Sept. 3, Gordon & Rees Phoenix partner Deanna R. Rader will speak at the Arizona School Boards Association Law Conference. Her presentation on “Hot Topics in School Discipline” will be held from 1:05 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. at the JW Marriott Camelback Inn in Scottsdale.
Rader will provide an extensive overview of the challenges facing schools, such as release agreements and disciplined students; teacher rights in dealing with students; open enrollment and student discipline; alternatives to discipline; and the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights’ guidance on student discipline. This year’s conference features 28 breakout sessions on topics ranging from foundational legal issues to the most pressing legal concerns of the day.
Rader is an experienced litigator in Gordon & Rees’s Employment Practice Group who defends employers in state and federal court. She advises clients in a variety of matters such as risk assessment, disability, employee training, reductions in force, and compliance issues, including FMLA, FLSA, ADA, ADEA, and Title VII. She represents school districts, charter schools, and private schools on issues including compliance with statutes applicable to public schools, such as IDEA, FERPA, Title IX, Arizona’s Open Meeting Law, and Public Records Law. She also provides training to employers and school administrators regarding personnel policies and handbooks, employee discipline and termination, and student and employee harassment and discrimination.
