Gordon & Rees LLP is continuing its ambitious nationwide expansion in the new year with the opening of its newest office in Chicago, Illinois, effective February 1, 2008. This office, located at One North Franklin in downtown Chicago, brings the firm’s total to fifteen in nine states.

Michael Tone, a former partner in the Chicago office of Ross, Dixon & Bell, will serve as the Managing Partner of the new office, and will initially be joined by former Ross, Dixon & Bell colleagues Kimberly Blair (senior counsel) and Tyler Mertes (associate), as well as partner Ryan Brown, who will be relocating from the San Diego office. The office will focus primarily on commercial litigation, insurance and professional liability.

Gordon & Rees Firmwide Managing Partner Dion Cominos noted that, “Chicago has been a priority legal market of ours for some time; but we needed to find the right individual to lead the effort on the ground. Mike (Tone) brings to us a wealth of experience and the ideal pedigree to make a positive impact for Gordon & Rees and our clients in the Midwest.” Cominos added that, “many of our national clients were already quite familiar and favorably impressed with Mike and his colleagues. We therefore expect the transition will be seamless and the synergies outstanding.”

The last six years have witnessed a steep growth curve for the San Francisco-based firm, as new offices have opened in Phoenix, Portland, Dallas, Houston, Denver, New York, Morristown and Long Island. Correspondingly, the attorney count has grown to more than 350 attorneys, putting the firm at number 148 in the National Law Journal’s list of the country’s largest firms.

Gordon & Rees’s expansion into new markets has been fueled by the firm’s ability to attract experienced attorneys to join the firm as exemplified by Tone’s addition in Chicago.

Tone has extensive experience in a broad range of complex litigation matters and has served as trial counsel on a national basis for numerous clients in matters involving commercial disputes, professional liability and employment. Blair and Mertes also have experience in professional liability and commercial litigation. Brown’s practice focuses on insurance coverage disputes and employment law.
