Partner John Browning Receives Philbin Award for Excellence in Legal Reporting

John Browning, a partner in Gordon & Rees' Dallas office, received the Philbin Award for Excellence in Legal Reporting as the Dallas Bar Association honored local broadcast and print journalists on October 22, 2007.

Mr. Browning won the Best Suburban Feature Story for an installment of his syndicated newspaper column "Legally Speaking" entitled "College Liability and Mentally Ill Students: A No-Win Situation." Written in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings, the article demonstrates the legal dilemmas faced by college administrators seeking to balance campus security concerns with the privacy rights of mentally ill students. Court TV anchor Jack Ford was the keynote speaker for the 24th Annual Philbin Awards, attended by approximately 250 judges, lawyers, and journalists. This was the third year Mr. Browning was nominated for the legal journalism award, and the third straight year he has won.
