Intellectual Property Team Obtains Favorable Judgment

On April 18, 2012, the Intellectual Property litigation team of Richard Sybert, Susan Meyer and Hazel Pangan successfully obtained judgment for almost $400,000 for client CAVS USA against defendant Tennessee Production Center, doing business as "Chartbuster." CAVS, based in Los Angeles, is a leading seller of karaoke machines and software. Chartbuster had furnished CD song disks for use in CAVS machines, warranting that the music was properly licensed. Unfortunately, these warranties proved to be false, and CAVS was forced to defend itself against song owner copyright infringement suits in federal court in Tennessee, resulting not only in costly settlements but in substantial inventory of now-unsaleable music and lost profits. When Chartbuster failed to answer the complaint, Gordon & Rees was able to meet the exacting requirements for a default "prove-up," and Judge Walter in the Central District of California issued the Order.
