Howard N. Shipley is a registered patent attorney and a partner with Gordon & Rees, LLP. His practice includes counseling clients on the strategic use of intellectual property. Mr. Shipley has designed and implemented several major programs for acquiring and enforcing intellectual property rights for his clients. He is experienced in all phases of patent prosecution in a wide variety of technologies, including electronic, software, power plant and energy technologies, and various mechanical applications. He has particular experience with intellectual property issues confronting companies in the automotive industry. Mr. Shipley also routinely advises his clients on all aspects of patent validity and infringement.
Mr. Shipley is experienced in all aspects of IP litigation. His experience includes patent, trademark and trade secret litigation in federal court as well as Patent Interference proceedings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He also has experience with unfair trade practice cases at the U.S. International Trade Commission and an international arbitration in Singapore.
Mr. Shipley’s clients have included automotive equipment suppliers in the following technology areas: electronics, seats, engines, safety equipment, interiors and HVAC systems. He also serves as patent counsel to an electric automobile manufacturer. He has represented major industrial companies on IP issues relating to power generators, compressors, pumps, engines and marine equipment.
Mr. Shipley is a former patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and was a law clerk to the Honorable Claude M. Hilton, United States District Judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Mr. Shipley is a former nuclear submarine officer and retired as a commander from the U.S. Naval Reserve. Mr. Shipley is a member of the American Nuclear Society.
