Kirsten A. Schultz is Senior Counsel in the Seattle office of Gordon Rees and a member of the Professional Liability Defense practice group.

Prior to joining Gordon & Rees, Ms. Schultz practiced complex litigation for over fifteen years at prominent Pacific Northwest regional and national law firms. For nine of them, Ms. Schultz’s practice emphasized the defense of legal malpractice claims. She has represented lawyers in disciplinary proceedings and defended numerous medical malpractice, professional negligence, and long term care malpractice claims. She has successfully defended several malpractice matters through appeal and denial of discretionary review in the Washington State Courts and defended several interlocutory appeals in Federal Court, including a Petition for Writ of Certiorari in the Supreme Court of the United States.

Over her career, Ms. Schultz has collected attorneys’ fee awards in garnishment actions, has managed cases in large loss property subrogation with an emphasis on construction, product liability, contract and negligence claims, and has handled general insurance defense matters involving premises liability and fire loss.

As a young lawyer, Ms. Schultz began her career focused on the states attorney general’s tobacco litigation, representing thirteen states through global settlement. She successfully requested amendment to the Arizona action to include a count for negligent entrustment, alleging that the industry intentionally marketed and targeted children. The claim survived dismissal and ultimately allowed an award of damages. At the conclusion of tobacco litigation, Ms. Schultz investigated and drafted class certification briefs in securities, OEM and Fen-Phen litigation, as well as drafted several preliminary injunction motions in multiple states. Ms. Schultz also assisted on legal, accounting and financial matters involving Einstein/Noah Bagels, Boston Chicken and Templeton Vietnam Opportunities Fund.
