Nicholas Smith concentrates his practice in mineral and energy real estate law for oil and gas exploration and development companies throughout the Appalachian Basin states of Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Primarily, he has focused on conducting oil and gas title analysis, including drafting drilling title opinions and division order title opinions, and has co-managed due-diligence reviews for mergers and asset transfers by various energy companies for hydrocarbon, coal, and surface ownership and leasehold interests.
Prior to joining Gordon & Rees, Mr. Smith was an associate engaged in the Energy Title practice with a medium-sized, national energy and business law firm. Mr. Smith also has experience working in-house for a large energy company managing coal asset records and has significant experience in title abstracting.
Although not part of his active practice, Mr. Smith is passionate about historic preservation, with specific interest in the protection of battlefields and significant structures, and the redevelopment of historic buildings within cities and towns to encourage the growth of small-businesses and entrepreneurism.
