Black Law Students Association Recognizes Gordon & Rees's Participation in the "Meet the 1Ls" Event in San Francisco

As part of Gordon & Rees’s diversity program, the Chair of the firm’s Diversity Committee, Jack (Skip) McCowan, recently attended the “Meet the 1Ls” event of the Black Law Students Association of the University of California Hastings College of the Law.  Joining Skip were two Gordon & Rees associates who graduated from Hastings and were former BLSA members -  Maria Jones, and Michael Wilson, Jr.

Mariam M. Smairat, the Secretary of the Black Law Students Association, sent Skip a thank you letter stating that his “presence provided 1Ls with an invaluable networking opportunity to develop a rapport with practicing lawyers and potential future employers.  It also gave our 1Ls valuable ‘real life’ information about the practice of law and encouraged them to begin thinking seriously about the career paths they can pursue with their legal education.”

Gordon & Rees is proud to sponsor and participate in a wide range of diversity events throughout the firm’s 17 U.S. offices.  “We are very proud of our leadership in promoting lawyer diversity and our ongoing efforts demonstrate that the commitment to diversity in the legal profession gains even greater importance in times of economic challenge,” Skip McCowan.

The mission of the Black Law Students Association is to “articulate and promote the professional needs and goals of Black law students; to foster and encourage professional competence; and bring about change within the legal system in order to make it responsive to the needs of the Black community.” For more information about the Black Law Students Association at the University of California Hastings College of the Law, please click here.
