Gordon & Rees Raleigh Partner Knicole Emanuel Interviewed by WRAL Regarding Medicaid Billing Snafu

Gordon & Rees Raleigh partner Knicole Emanuel was interviewed and quoted in an article revealing the troubles facing a North Carolina dental practice that is one of hundreds in the state being billed for dental services provided to pregnant women under Medicaid.

Although the dentists had checked their patients’ eligibility for care under Medicaid, there has been some debate over whether the care was provided during or after the patients’ pregnancy, and who should bear the burden of proving patients were still pregnant when care was provided.

“The dentists … went on the Web and verified the patient was Medicaid-eligible for the dental services. Then they asked the patient if they were pregnant, and then they performed the services,” said Emanuel, who argued it isn’t right that the state is blaming the dentists for not making sure their patients weren’t pregnant anymore.

For more than 15 years, Knicole Emanuel has maintained a litigation practice concentrating on Medicare and Medicaid litigation, health care regulatory compliance, administrative law, and regulatory law.
