Gordon & Rees Welcomes Thirteen New Attorneys Nationwide in May 2018

In May, Gordon & Rees welcomed thirteen new attorneys to our Chicago, Denver, Hartford, Los Angeles, Louisville, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco offices. They join us as members of the Business Transactions, Commercial Litigation, Employment, Environmental/Toxic Tort, and Maritime Practice Groups.

Rosan Agbajoh, Associate
San Francisco, Commercial Litigation

Rosan joins the San Francisco office as a member of the Commercial Litigation practice group. Rosan earned her J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law and her B.A. from California State University East Bay.


Lillian Alves, Of Counsel
Denver, Commercial Litigation

Lillian joins the Denver office as a member of the Commercial Litigation practice group. Prior to joining Gordon & Rees, she was the Deputy Securities Commissioner at the Colorado Division of Securities. She is also a former federal prosecutor, having served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Colorado during her time with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She is experienced in litigation including jury trials, administrative hearings, motions practice, and appeals. She has led countless government investigations as a federal prosecutor and state securities regulator. Lillian earned her J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center and her B.A. from Colorado College.


Karen Culton, Senior Counsel
Hartford, Business Transactions

Karen joins the Hartford office as a member of the Business Transactions practice group. She has diverse business transactions experience, including M&A, JVs and joint development arrangements, IT and BPO sourcing transactions, and private equity and venture finance, as well as past trademark prosecution and litigation experience. Karen represents both acquirers and targets in middle-market stock, asset and merger transactions and has experience in many industries, including software, manufacturing, logistics, medical devices, electronics, big data, and cable television. Karen earned her J.D. from Washington University National Law Center and her M.A. from the University of St. Andrews.


Nerissa Diaz, Associate
Chicago, Environmental/Toxic Tort

Nerissa joins the Chicago office as a member of the Environmental/Toxic Tort practice group. She handles matters throughout the civil litigation realm, including insurance defense, product liability, mass torts, and commercial litigation. Prior to joining the firm, Nerissa handled insurance subrogation, torts, and contract cases. She also previously served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Judge Raúl Vega, worked in criminal law at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law’s Center on Wrongful Convictions, and provided in-house legal advice for Levy Restaurants. Nerissa earned her J.D. from DePaul University College of Law and her B.A. from Northwestern University.


Robert Kuehl, Partner
Chicago, Commercial Litigation

Robert joins the Chicago office as a member of the Commercial Litigation practice group. She handles matters throughout the civil litigation realm, including insurance defense, product liability, mass torts, and commercial litigation. He has tried over one hundred jury trials on behalf of corporations and insurers, and has a ninety-five percent success rate defending claims involving personal injuries. His expertise includes extensive experience in automobile, common carrier and livery liability. In addition to his courtroom success, he has negotiated the favorable settlement of over five hundred cases and has authored multiple appellate briefs. Robert earned his J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and his B.A. from Purdue University.


Robyn Leonard, Partner
San Francisco, Maritime

Robyn joins the San Francisco office as a member of the Maritime practice group. Since 2006, she has represented insurance carriers, third-party administrators and self-insured employers in matters arising under the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act and its extensions, including the Defense Base Act. Robyn earned her J.D. from the University of Denver and her B.S. from The Ohio State University.

San Diego, Employment

Robert joins the San Diego office as a member of the Employment practice group. Robert earned his J.D. from the University of St. Thomas School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.


Daniel Marin-Finn, Associate
Los Angeles, Employment

Daniel joins the Los Angeles office as a member of the Employment practice group. He focuses his employment practice on wage and hour, wrongful termination, and discrimination. Daniel earned his J.D. from Emory University School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Southern California.


Jordan Matthis, Associate
Chicago, Employment

Jordan joins the Chicago office as a member of the Employment practice group. Prior to joining Gordon & Rees, Jordan was an Assistant State’s Attorney in both the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau and Civil Actions Bureau of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. As an Assistant State’s Attorney, she prosecuted criminal misdemeanors and defended Cook County against civil rights, labor and employment, and medical malpractice claims. She has extensive litigation experience and has served as lead trial counsel in over 100 bench trials and in 14 jury trials taken to verdict. Jordan earned her J.D. from Southern Illinois University, School of Law and her B.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.


Denise Motta, Of Counsel
Louisville, Commercial Litigation

Denise joins the Louisville office as a member of the Commercial Litigation practice group. She has extensive experience litigating complex litigation claims in state and federal courts. Her litigation background includes personal injury, premises liability, construction defect, insurance coverage, ERISA, employment, product liability, and contractual disputes. She has significant experience in the coordination of litigation on both the national and state level, having represented companies on both fronts, and has been involved several cases coordinated in multidistrict litigation. Denise earned her J.D. from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law, Northern Kentucky University and her B.A. from the University of Louisville.


Raymond Muro, Senior Counsel
Los Angeles, Commercial Litigation

Raymond joins the Los Angeles office as a member of the Commercial Litigation practice group. He has ten years of experience defending corporate and individual clients in state and federal court through all stages of litigation, including trial and appeal. Raymond earned his J.D. from Loyola Law School and his B.A. from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

Mona joins the Los Angeles office as a member of the Employment practice group. Mona earned her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and her B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles.


Douglas Smurr, Of Counsel
Sacramento, Commercial Litigation

Douglas joins the Sacramento office as a member of the Commercial Litigation practice group. For over 25 years, he has been a practicing international business attorney with a diverse litigation and transaction practice based in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Besides his vast business litigation and transaction work, Douglas advises clients in implementing FCPA, OFAC, and Patriot Act compliance programs and defends domestic and international institutions under Department of Justice and Security and Exchange Commission investigations. He also advises eCommerce and Start-Up entities in structuring stock option plans in conjunction with angel, seed, series A and B funding with private investors, venture capitalists, and equity funds. Douglas earned his J.D. from McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific and his B.A. from the University of California, Davis.
