Michael J. Carroll is Co-Managing Partner of the firm’s Des Moines office. He focuses his practice on the defense of major medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers in product liability matters. Michael has served as national, regional and workup coordinating counsel for several Fortune 500 companies providing cost-efficient, effective representation that maximizes the value of their legal spending. Michael proactively assists his clients with resolving litigation before trial becomes necessary.

Michael is a compelling oral advocate. He has briefed and argued various motions in state and federal courts nationwide leading to dismissals of cases before trial. Michael has obtained dismissals after persuading courts that product recalls do not equate to a defect under the law, and he has significant experience with the issue of the preemption of claims against manufacturers of prescription medical devices. He has also obtained dispositive motion victories on the grounds of innocent seller statutes, corporate veil statutes, product identification deficiencies and statutes of limitations.

Michael is a creative thinker who is willing to try bold strategies that have led to significant cost-savings for his clients. He also has the confidence to make tough decisions and give frank advice. Michael has significant experience in mass torts and multidistrict litigation and has guided strategy in all aspects of trial preparation, including initial case strategy, producing company witnesses, and deposing experts and key prescribing and treating physicians in bellwether cases.

Before becoming an attorney, Michael gained experienced in federal and state regulatory and legal compliance matters at a Fortune 500 company.
He is a tennis fan and player. He has attended Wimbledon, the French Open and the U.S. Open.
