Gordon & Rees was founded in San Francisco in 1974 by Stuart Gordon and Donald Rees, both of whom maintain practices and are active in the life of the firm. Gordon & Rees was founded on the two key principles of dedication to clients and dedication to employees. Stu and Don created a firm with a unique culture, proven by the fact that many of the firm's lawyers and employees have not worked anywhere else. For example, Dion Cominos, the current Firmwide Managing Partner, was hired as a Summer Associate in 1986 and has spent his entire career at the firm.

In 40 years, Gordon & Rees has grown from a small insurance defense firm to a national litigation and business transactions firm with more than 600 lawyers in 33 offices throughout the United States, including lawyers qualified in Canada, England and Wales, Hong Kong, and Mexico. Similarly, Gordon & Rees has advanced to #89 in the National Law Journal's 2014 ranking of the 350 largest U.S.-based law firms. 2014 is the twelfth consecutive year Gordon & Rees has advanced in the survey since 2003 when the firm first appeared in the survey. In 2003, the survey noted "Leaping highest was San Francisco's Gordon & Rees; its 210 lawyers landed the firm at No. 186." The firm's rapid growth was highlighted again in the 2005 survey when Gordon & Rees was the fifth fastest growing firm among the "Top 10 Growth Leaders."
Gordon & Rees holds a proud and prominent position among the group of law firms known as the "Second Hundred" in the AmLaw 200 rankings. The firm continues to grow with the opening of seven new offices in 2012 in Carlsbad, California, St. Louis, Missouri, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Maryland, Tysons Corner, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Rapid City, South Dakota. Additionally, the firm opened its Philadelphia office in February 2013 and its Raleigh, North Carolina office in August 2013, Charleston, South Carolina office in December 2013, Oakland, California office in April 2014, Tampa, Florida office in September 2014, and Birmingham, Alabama in November 2014, reflecting the firm's continued path of national growth aided by increasing business from corporate America's shift to middle-size national firms.
